Overview

Autologous CD19 CAR-T cells are a cellular immunotherapy consisting of a patient's own T cells genetically engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) specific for the CD19 antigen. CD19 is a cell surface marker ubiquitously expressed on B cells, making it a primary target for depleting pathogenic B-cell populations. While widely approved for B-cell malignancies, this therapy is being investigated in investigator-initiated trials, such as those led by Jinbo Chen at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, for the treatment of refractory autoimmune diseases like pemphigus vulgaris. In these conditions, the CAR-T cells aim to eliminate the B-cell clones producing autoantibodies against desmogleins, potentially offering a curative approach for patients who have failed standard immunosuppressive therapies.
