Overview

Autologous CD34+ cell therapy is a regenerative medicine approach involving the intramyocardial injection of a patient's own mobilized peripheral blood CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. Developed significantly by Dr. Douglas Losordo at Northwestern University and later Caladrius Biosciences, the therapy aims to treat chronic myocardial ischemia and congestive heart failure. The mechanism of action is therapeutic angiogenesis, where the CD34+ cells promote the formation of new microvasculature (neovascularization) through direct incorporation into blood vessels and the paracrine release of angiogenic growth factors. This process improves myocardial perfusion and function in patients with refractory angina or ischemic heart failure.
