Autologous CD34+ cell therapy is an investigational cell-based biologic treatment developed for cardiovascular conditions including myocardial ischemia and congestive heart failure. The therapy involves mobilizing a patient's own CD34-positive hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), followed by collection via apheresis and purification. These cells are then delivered to the heart via intramyocardial, transendocardial, or intracoronary injection. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily attributed to the promotion of angiogenesis and vasculogenesis; the CD34+ cells home to ischemic tissue and facilitate the formation of new microvasculature through both direct differentiation and the paracrine secretion of angiogenic growth factors. Dr. Douglas Losordo has been a central figure in the clinical development of this platform, which has been evaluated in various clinical trials for refractory angina, acute myocardial infarction, and ischemic heart failure.
