Overview

Autologous CD34+ endothelial progenitor cells is an investigational cell therapy developed by the National Science Council of Taiwan in collaboration with Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The treatment involves the mobilization of CD34+ cells from the patient's bone marrow into the peripheral blood using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), followed by leukapheresis and cell purification. The isolated CD34+ cells are then administered via intra-coronary transfusion into the heart. The mechanism of action relies on the ability of these progenitor cells to home to ischemic myocardium and promote angiogenesis and neovascularization, which improves blood supply to the heart muscle. This therapy is primarily targeted at patients with chronic ischemic heart disease and diffuse coronary artery disease who have exhausted conventional revascularization options.
