Autologous CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an experimental cell therapy protocol developed by the Hospital Universitario Dr. Jose E. Gonzalez for treating chronic complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The procedure involves the mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells from the patient's bone marrow into the peripheral blood using subcutaneous filgrastim (a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor). Following mobilization, CD34+ cells are harvested and subsequently administered via intramuscular injection into the gastrocnemius muscles. This therapeutic approach is designed to promote angiogenesis and nerve regeneration, specifically targeting limb ischemia and sensorimotor peripheral diabetic neuropathy by improving nerve conduction velocity and local perfusion.
