This autologous hematopoietic stem cell therapy, developed by the University Hospital, Basel, involves the use of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for the treatment of chronic pressure ulcers, particularly in paraplegic and tetraplegic patients. The therapeutic process begins with the harvesting of bone marrow from the patient's iliac crest, followed by the isolation of CD34+ cells under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions. These isolated cells are then suspended in saline and injected directly into the wound bed and margins. The mechanism of action relies on the ability of these stem cells to stimulate the wound healing environment, specifically by promoting the formation of granulation tissue and facilitating wound contraction. Clinical evaluation in a Phase I/II pilot study (NCT00535548) demonstrated the feasibility and safety of this approach, showing a reduction in wound volume compared to control treatments.
