Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy being developed by the University of California, Davis for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The active ingredient consists of autologous CD34+ stem cells isolated from the patient's own bone marrow. The therapy involves a same-day procedure where bone marrow is aspirated from the patient's iliac crest, CD34+ cells are isolated under Good Manufacturing Practice conditions at the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures using a Ficoll density gradient and the Miltenyi CliniMACS system, and then the isolated cells are administered via intravitreal injection into the affected eye. The therapy is believed to work through the CD34+ cells' ability to home to damaged retinal tissue and potentially generate molecular changes to reduce photoreceptor degeneration. A Phase I clinical trial (BMSCRP1) demonstrated that the therapy is feasible and well-tolerated, with some patients showing improvements in visual function.
