Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Autologous CoNS-AM+ is a **personalized topical live biotherapeutic product** developed in investigator-sponsored studies at the University of California San Diego for **atopic dermatitis**. The therapy consists of each patient's own **coagulase-negative Staphylococcus strains with antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus**, isolated from nonlesional skin, expanded ex vivo, and reformulated into a moisturizer or lotion for topical reapplication. Its intended mechanism is to **restore protective skin commensals**, directly suppress **S. aureus** colonization through bacterially produced antimicrobial activity, and thereby improve local eczema severity without systemic antibiotic exposure. In the reported randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled clinical trial, treatment was applied twice daily for 7 days to the forearms and was associated with marked reduction in **S. aureus** burden and improvement in local Eczema Area and Severity Index scores, with no serious adverse events reported. The active bacterial species varied by patient and included **Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus warneri, and Staphylococcus capitis**.
