MACI (matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation) is an autologous cellularized scaffold product indicated for the repair of symptomatic, single or multiple full-thickness cartilage defects of the knee in adults. The product consists of a patient's own (autologous) cultured chondrocytes seeded onto a resorbable Type I/III collagen membrane derived from porcine tissue. The therapeutic process involves a two-stage procedure: first, a biopsy of healthy cartilage is taken from a non-weight-bearing area of the patient's joint; second, the chondrocytes are expanded in vitro and seeded onto the collagen membrane, which is then surgically implanted into the defect site. Once implanted, the chondrocytes produce a new extracellular matrix that regenerates hyaline-like cartilage, restoring joint function and reducing pain. Originally developed by Genzyme (later Sanofi), the product is currently owned and marketed by Vericel Corporation.
