Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy being investigated by the Chinese PLA General Hospital for the treatment of chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The therapy involves the ex vivo expansion of a patient's own peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using a combination of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies, and interleukin-2 (IL-2). This process generates a heterogeneous population of immune cells, predominantly CD3+CD56+ T cells, which possess both T-cell-like and natural killer (NK) cell-like properties. The therapeutic rationale is based on evidence that CD3+CD56+ cells are significantly decreased in patients with psoriasis; restoring these cell levels via intravenous infusion is intended to modulate the immune environment and alleviate skin lesions.
