Overview

Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy being investigated by the People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as a maintenance treatment for patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) who have completed first-line chemotherapy. CIK cells are a heterogeneous population of immune effector cells, predominantly CD3+ and CD56+ T cells, generated by the ex vivo expansion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the presence of interferon-gamma, anti-CD3 antibodies, and interleukin-2. These cells exhibit potent, non-major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restricted cytotoxic activity against a wide range of tumor cells. The therapy aims to eradicate residual disease and prevent recurrence by enhancing the patient's systemic antitumor immunity and altering the interaction between the tumor and its host.
