Overview

Autologous Dendritic Cell HIV Vaccination is an experimental cellular immunotherapy developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. The therapy involves the ex vivo differentiation of a patient's own adherent monocytic precursors into mature dendritic cells, which are then pulsed with a cocktail of highly conserved HIV-1 derived peptides and an influenza matrix peptide. These antigen-presenting cells are re-introduced into the patient via intravenous or subcutaneous injection to prime and expand HIV-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell populations. By targeting highly conserved regions of the HIV-1 genome, the vaccine aims to overcome viral mutational escape and enhance the immune system's ability to control viral load in individuals on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
