Overview

This investigational autologous dendritic cell immunotherapy, developed by Stanford University, is a cell-based cancer vaccine designed to treat liver metastases from colorectal and neuroendocrine cancers. The therapeutic strategy involves the intratumoral administration of a patient's own dendritic cells directly into liver lesions that have recently undergone radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The RFA procedure serves to kill tumor cells and release a broad spectrum of tumor-associated antigens in situ. The injected dendritic cells then capture these antigens, migrate to regional lymph nodes, and prime a systemic T-cell-mediated immune response against the cancer. This approach aims to generate a systemic anti-tumor effect, targeting both the local ablated lesion and distant metastatic sites. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial (NCT00074516), which was ultimately terminated due to slow patient accrual.
