Overview

This autologous dendritic cell vaccine is an investigational immunotherapy developed by the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota for the treatment of recurrent malignant brain tumors, including glioblastoma multiforme, medulloblastoma, and ependymoma. The vaccine is produced by harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells and loading them with antigens derived from allogeneic brain tumor stem cells. This approach aims to train the patient's immune system to specifically target and destroy cancer stem cells, which are often responsible for treatment resistance and recurrence. In clinical trials, the vaccine is administered intradermally, frequently in combination with imiquimod, a Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) agonist, to enhance the maturation and migration of the dendritic cells to local lymph nodes and stimulate a robust anti-tumor T-cell response.
