Overview

Autologous Epstein-Barr virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (EBV-specific CTLs) is an investigational adoptive cell therapy developed by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nantes (Nantes University Hospital). The therapy involves the ex vivo expansion of a patient's own T lymphocytes to specifically target and eliminate cells infected with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), focusing on antigens such as EBNA1, LMP1, and LMP2A. The biological rationale is based on the hypothesis that a deficiency in CD8+ T cell-mediated immune surveillance of EBV allows EBV-infected autoreactive B cells to accumulate and drive the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). By restoring this immune surveillance, the therapy aims to reduce disease activity in patients with MS and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS).
