Overview

This is an experimental autologous cell therapy developed by Imperial College London for the treatment of chronic liver insufficiency and end-stage liver failure. The therapeutic process involves the mobilization of a patient's own CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), followed by collection via leukapheresis. These cells are then expanded ex vivo in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility before being infused back into the patient through either the hepatic artery or the portal vein. The treatment is designed to stimulate liver regeneration and repair damaged hepatic tissue. Clinical results from Phase I/II trials have indicated that the procedure is safe and may lead to improvements in liver function markers such as serum albumin and bilirubin levels.
