Overview

Autologous fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an experimental biologic therapy being investigated as a placebo control in a clinical trial for the treatment of bipolar depression. The intervention is part of a randomized, double-blind study (NCT03279224) led by Dr. Valerie Taylor, comparing it against allogenic FMT (using stool from healthy donors). [1, 6, 7] The procedure involves collecting a patient's own stool, processing it, and re-administering it via colonoscopy. [6, 9] The underlying mechanism of action being tested is the modulation of the gut microbiome to influence mental health through the gut-brain axis. [2, 6] This pilot study aims to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of manipulating the gut microbiota as an adjunctive treatment for individuals with treatment-resistant bipolar depression. [6, 7]
