Overview

Autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) are used in a therapeutic procedure known as autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) to treat aggressive or treatment-resistant multiple sclerosis. The process involves mobilizing and harvesting the patient's own stem cells from the bone marrow or peripheral blood, followed by a conditioning regimen of high-dose chemotherapy (such as cyclophosphamide, fludarabine, and alemtuzumab) to deplete the existing dysfunctional immune system. The harvested HPCs are then re-infused into the patient to reconstitute a new, potentially non-autoreactive immune system. This 'immune reset' aims to halt the inflammatory process and prevent further neurological damage in patients who have failed standard disease-modifying therapies.
