Overview

This investigational autologous stem cell therapy is being developed by the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for the treatment of various inflammatory and dystrophic corneal diseases. The therapy utilizes a combination of two distinct cell types: autologous limbal stem cells (corneal epithelial stem cells) and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). These cells are mixed with a 1% sodium hyaluronate solution for administration. The treatment aims to leverage the regenerative capacity of limbal stem cells to restore the corneal epithelium and the immunomodulatory and trophic properties of mesenchymal stem cells to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for indications such as corneal ulcers, keratitis, corneal burns, and epithelial defects.
