Overview

Autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong are an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The procedure involves harvesting MSCs from the patient's own bone marrow, which are then processed and injected intra-articularly into the affected knee joint. These cells are hypothesized to alleviate osteoarthritis symptoms and promote joint health through several mechanisms: they can differentiate into chondrocytes to potentially repair cartilage defects, and they release a variety of paracrine factors (including cytokines and growth factors) that exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. This dual action aims to reduce joint pain, improve function, and slow the progression of cartilage degeneration.
