The autologous mesenchymal stem cell product is a cell-based biologic therapy developed by Imperial College London for the treatment of rapidly evolving active multiple sclerosis (MS). The product consists of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from the patient's own bone marrow, which are then expanded ex vivo and re-administered. These cells are thought to exert therapeutic effects through immunomodulation, neuroprotection, and the promotion of endogenous repair mechanisms such as remyelination. The therapy has been investigated in the Phase 2 STREAMS (Stem Cells in Rapidly Evolving Active Multiple Sclerosis) trial, which contributed to the larger international MESEMS (MEsenchymal StEm cells for Multiple Sclerosis) consortium study.
