Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells is a cell-based regenerative therapy being developed by Mayo Clinic for the treatment of multiple system atrophy (MSA). The therapy involves harvesting mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from a patient's own adipose tissue, expanding them in vitro, and then delivering them back to the patient via intrathecal injection. The mechanism of action is centered on the paracrine secretion of neurotrophic factors by the MSCs, which is intended to provide neuroprotective support and potentially slow the progression of the neurodegenerative processes characteristic of MSA, such as autonomic failure, parkinsonism, and ataxia. Clinical data from early-phase trials have demonstrated safety and tolerability, with signals of dose-dependent efficacy in reducing disease progression compared to historical controls.
