This autologous cell therapy consists of expanded mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from a patient's own bone marrow, developed by the Spanish Cell Therapy Network (Red de Terapia Celular, or TerCel). It is specifically investigated for the treatment of idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), a condition characterized by the death of bone tissue due to interrupted blood supply. The therapy involves the intraosseous injection of these expanded cells into the necrotic area, often following core decompression. The MSCs are intended to promote bone regeneration by differentiating into osteoblasts and to stimulate revascularization through the secretion of pro-angiogenic factors like VEGF. This dual approach aims to restore bone structural integrity and prevent the collapse of the femoral head, thereby avoiding or delaying the need for total hip replacement.
