This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the University of Liege for the treatment of atrophic nonunion fractures. The therapy involves the extraction of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from a patient's own bone marrow, followed by ex vivo expansion in a laboratory setting. Approximately 40 million of these cultured MSCs are then percutaneously injected directly into the site of the nonunion fracture. The primary mechanism of action is the differentiation of these stem cells into osteoblasts and the secretion of paracrine growth factors that stimulate callus formation and accelerate bone regeneration in fractures that have failed to heal through standard surgical or natural processes after six months.
