Overview

This investigational autologous cell therapy, developed by Uppsala University Hospital, utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from a patient's own bone marrow to treat newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy is administered via intravenous infusion and leverages the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs to inhibit the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. By modulating the immune environment, the treatment aims to preserve endogenous insulin production and maintain C-peptide levels. Clinical evaluation has been conducted through Phase 2 randomized, blinded trials (notably NCT02057211), led by principal investigator Per-Ola Carlsson, which have demonstrated the safety and potential efficacy of this approach in preserving beta-cell function in recently diagnosed patients.
