MSV + AS is a combination therapy consisting of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and an atelocollagen sponge (AS) scaffold, developed by the University Hospital of Montpellier for the treatment of degenerative disc disease (DDD). The therapy involves the intradiscal injection of bone marrow-derived MSCs seeded onto an atelocollagen sponge. The mechanism of action relies on the regenerative potential of MSCs, which can differentiate into chondrocyte-like cells and secrete various growth factors and cytokines to promote extracellular matrix synthesis and reduce inflammation within the intervertebral disc. The atelocollagen sponge serves as a biocompatible scaffold that supports cell attachment, survival, and localized delivery, enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of the stem cells in restoring disc height and function.
