This is an investigational autologous cell therapy consisting of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed by Emory University. The therapy involves the needle aspiration of a patient's own bone marrow, followed by the expansion of MSCs in a platelet lysate-containing medium to produce freshly cultured, early-passage cells. These cells are intended to treat steroid-refractory acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) by promoting an immunosuppressive and immunoregulatory environment. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of donor T-cell immune responses through the secretion of paracrine factors (proteins, peptides, and hormones), mitochondrial transfer, and the release of exosomes or microvesicles, thereby fostering immune tolerance in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.
