**Autologous mesenchymal stromal cells** are a patient-specific, culture-expanded bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cell therapy being developed by Fundación Instituto de Estudios de Ciencias de la Salud de Castilla y León for intra-articular treatment of knee osteoarthritis. In the Phase III ARTROCELL study, the investigational product is administered as a single intra-articular knee injection and is evaluated against allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells and hyaluronic acid. The therapeutic rationale is that MSCs can exert local paracrine immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, trophic, and tissue-homeostasis effects within the osteoarthritic joint; however, no single molecular target or clinically established cartilage-regeneration mechanism has been defined for this product.
