Autologous muscle-derived stem cells (MDSC) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Royan Institute for the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). The therapeutic process involves obtaining a muscle biopsy from the patient's Biceps Femoralis to isolate myogenic stem cells, which are then expanded in vitro. These cultured cells are subsequently re-administered to the patient via intramuscular injection. This regenerative medicine approach is designed to address the progressive muscle wasting and degeneration characteristic of FSHD by promoting muscle fiber repair and regeneration. The safety and feasibility of this autologous transplantation have been evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial (NCT02208713).
