This experimental autologous cell therapy, developed by the Royan Institute, consists of a combination of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) and muscle-derived stem cells (MDSC) for the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). The AD-MSCs are sourced from the Royan Adipose Tissue Bank, while the MDSCs are isolated from the patient's own biceps femoralis muscle. The treatment is administered via intramuscular injection into affected muscles, such as the biceps, triceps, and trapezoid, with the goal of regenerating damaged muscle tissue and improving muscle function. A Phase I clinical trial (NCT02208713) was conducted to evaluate the safety and feasibility of this dual-cell transplantation approach.
