Autologous oral mucosa-derived adult keratinocytes, ex vivo expanded, is an autologous cell therapy developed by the Fundación Pública Andaluza para la Investigación Biosanitaria de Andalucía Oriental Alejandro Otero (FIBAO) for the treatment of cleft lip and palate. The process involves harvesting a small biopsy of the patient's own oral mucosa, isolating the keratinocytes, and expanding them in a laboratory setting to create a cellular graft. This graft is then surgically implanted into the alveolar cleft to provide a functional epithelial lining, which is essential for successful bone grafting and mucosal closure. By using the patient's own cells, the therapy avoids immunological rejection and aims to improve surgical outcomes and reduce morbidity in pediatric patients with congenital craniofacial defects.
