Overview

Autologous pancreatic islets is a cell therapy procedure involving total pancreatectomy followed by islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). Developed by University Hospital, Lille, this approach is specifically being evaluated for patients with resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma who are at high risk for postoperative pancreatic fistula. The procedure involves resecting the entire pancreas to eliminate fistula risk, isolating the endocrine islets from the surgical specimen, and then transplanting them back into the patient via intraportal infusion and intramuscular injection. The goal is to prevent or mitigate the severe pancreatic endocrine insufficiency (brittle diabetes) that typically follows total pancreatectomy, thereby allowing patients to maintain metabolic control and successfully complete adjuvant chemotherapy.
