Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated suspension of platelets derived from a patient's own peripheral blood. It contains a high concentration of endogenous growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), as well as various cytokines that facilitate tissue regeneration and wound healing. In the treatment of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), PRP is administered via posterior subtenon injection. The therapeutic rationale involves leveraging the neuroprotective and angiogenic properties of these growth factors to reduce edema, improve microcirculation, and prevent further neuronal loss in the optic nerve head following an acute ischemic event. This specific application is being investigated by Uludag University in a prospective randomized controlled clinical study.
