Overview

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a biologic therapy developed by the Institut de Teràpia Regenerativa Tissular (ITRT) for the treatment of muscle ruptures, particularly those associated with hematoma. The preparation is derived from the patient's own blood through centrifugation to concentrate platelets, which subsequently release a variety of growth factors and cytokines (such as PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF) intended to accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. This specific PRP formulation was evaluated in the Phase 3 PRP-RICE clinical trial for 'tennis leg' and distal rectus femoral tears, where it was administered as a single infiltration following hematoma evacuation. Although intended to shorten recovery time, clinical results indicated no statistically significant difference compared to standard care.
