Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated preparation of a patient's own platelets in a small volume of plasma, typically achieving concentrations five times higher than baseline. Developed for use in chronic venous leg ulcers by the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, this biological therapy functions by releasing a high concentration of essential growth factors upon activation. These include platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor (TGF). These factors collectively stimulate angiogenesis, cell recruitment, and extracellular matrix remodeling, facilitating the healing of chronic wounds that have failed to respond to standard compression therapy.
