Overview

Autologous Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) is an investigational biologic therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), specifically in breast cancer survivors. The therapy involves the concentration of platelets from a patient's own blood through centrifugation. When injected into the vaginal canal and posterior fourchette, the concentrated platelets release growth factors—including VEGF, TGF-beta, and PDGF—that stimulate angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and tissue repair. This regenerative medicine approach provides a non-hormonal alternative for patients who are contraindicated for or prefer to avoid vaginal estrogen therapy, such as those on aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer.
