Overview

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-poor plasma (PPP) eye drops are biological products derived from a patient's own peripheral blood, specifically formulated for the treatment of ocular graft-versus-host disease (O-GVHD). Developed and investigated by Ladan Espandar, this therapy involves the concentration of platelets to harness their alpha-granules, which release a variety of growth factors and cytokines, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and epidermal growth factor (EGF). These components facilitate corneal epithelial cell proliferation and migration, promote wound healing, and provide anti-inflammatory support to the ocular surface. The treatment protocol typically involves a sequential application of PRP followed by PPP to maximize the regenerative potential of the plasma components.
