Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gel is a concentrated source of autologous platelets obtained by centrifugation of whole blood and activated with thrombin to form a coagulum. Developed by Xijing Hospital of Digestive Diseases, it is being investigated for the topical treatment of rectal mucosal ulcers in patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis. The gel acts as a reservoir for high concentrations of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and epithelial growth factor (EGF). These factors regulate cell functions such as attachment, migration, proliferation, and differentiation, promoting extracellular matrix accumulation and tissue regeneration to facilitate mucosal healing. In clinical trials, the gel is administered rectally, often in combination with systemic therapies like infliximab.
