This autologous cell therapy consists of polyclonal naturally occurring regulatory T cells (nTregs) that are isolated from a patient and expanded ex vivo. Developed by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with King's College London, the product is intended to prevent graft rejection in living-donor kidney transplant recipients. The therapy works by modulating the recipient's immune system to favor graft tolerance, potentially allowing for a reduction in standard maintenance immunosuppression. In clinical trials (notably 'The ONE Study'), the infusion of these cells post-transplantation was shown to be safe and associated with high rates of rejection-free survival compared to standard care.
