Overview
Autologous serum + Systane is a non-standard, compounded combination therapy used in ophthalmology for the management of severe dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders. This combination consists of autologous serum eye drops—prepared from a patient’s own blood and rich in growth factors, vitamins, immunoglobulins, and proteins that closely mimic natural tears—and Systane, a commercially available artificial tear lubricant (containing polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol) designed to provide symptomatic relief by stabilizing the tear film. Autologous serum promotes epithelial healing and provides essential nutrients absent in standard artificial tears[1][3][4]. The rationale for combining these therapies is to leverage both the biological healing properties of autologous serum and the lubricating effect of Systane for enhanced symptom control in refractory or severe cases[3][6]. This approach is typically reserved for patients who do not respond adequately to conventional treatments.
