Autologous serum (AS) eye drops are a blood-derived therapeutic used primarily for the treatment of severe dry eye syndrome and other ocular surface disorders. They are produced by collecting a patient's own blood, allowing it to clot, and then centrifuging it to separate the serum, which is subsequently diluted (often to 20% or 50%) with sterile saline or artificial tears. AS contains various growth factors (e.g., EGF, TGF-β), vitamins (e.g., Vitamin A), and proteins (e.g., fibronectin, albumin) that mimic the biochemical properties of natural tears, promoting corneal epithelial healing and maintaining ocular surface health. Because it is derived from the patient's own blood, it is free of preservatives and minimizes the risk of immunological reactions.
