Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of autologous serum tears (AST) and the corticosteroid loteprednol, both administered as ophthalmic (eye drop) treatments. - **Autologous serum tears** are custom-made eye drops derived from a patient's own blood. They contain growth factors, vitamins (such as vitamin A), cytokines, fibronectin, lysozyme, nerve growth factor (NGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and other proteins that closely mimic the composition of natural human tears[1][2][4][5]. Their mechanism is to supply essential tear components to promote healing of the ocular surface epithelium in conditions such as dry eye disease or persistent epithelial defects[5]. - **Loteprednol** is a synthetic corticosteroid used topically in the eye to reduce inflammation by inhibiting immune-mediated processes. It works by blocking the release of substances that cause swelling and irritation in ocular tissues[6][8][10]. Loteprednol is commonly prescribed for short-term management of inflammatory conditions including dry eye disease exacerbations or after surgery. The combination may be used sequentially or concurrently for severe or refractory cases of ocular surface disease—especially when both epithelial healing and anti-inflammatory effects are desired. Clinical reports suggest this regimen can improve symptoms more rapidly than either agent alone in select patients with neuropathic dry eye or persistent corneal defects[7].
