Overview

Autologous serum tears + sodium hyaluronate is an investigational ophthalmic combination therapy being evaluated by the University of Miami for the treatment of moderate-to-severe dry eye disease. The preparation consists of 50% autologous serum, derived from the patient's own peripheral blood, diluted with 0.2% sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid). Autologous serum serves as a biologic substitute for natural tears, providing essential epitheliotrophic factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vitamin A, and fibronectin, which promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation and migration. Sodium hyaluronate is a high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan that acts as a lubricant and viscosity-enhancing agent; it stabilizes the tear film, increases the residence time of the serum's bioactive components on the ocular surface, and binds to CD44 receptors to further promote wound healing.
