Overview

This therapy involves the isolation and re-administration of a patient's own (autologous) stem cells, typically derived from bone marrow or adipose tissue, in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Developed by the Lung Institute, the treatment was marketed for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). The proposed mechanism involves the anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors within the PRP to repair damaged lung tissue and improve pulmonary function. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT02216630) to assess safety and efficacy. However, the Lung Institute's practices have been subject to significant scrutiny and legal challenges due to a lack of robust clinical evidence and regulatory oversight, and the clinic has since undergone major operational changes.
