This therapy is a combination of autologous regulatory T cells (Treg cells) and interleukin-2 (IL-2). Autologous Treg cell therapy involves isolating regulatory T cells from the patient, expanding them ex vivo, and reinfusing them to modulate immune responses. Interleukin-2 is a cytokine critical for the survival, proliferation, and function of Tregs due to their high expression of the IL-2 receptor alpha chain (CD25). The combination aims to enhance immune tolerance by both increasing the number/functionality of regulatory T cells and supporting their survival with exogenous IL-2. This approach is being investigated for its potential in treating autoimmune diseases, preventing transplant rejection, and modulating immune responses in cancer. Mechanistically, IL-2 promotes expansion and stability of infused or endogenous Tregs via activation of JAK/STAT5 signaling pathways[3][5]. The combined modality leverages cell therapy (autologous adoptive transfer) with cytokine support.
