Overview

This investigational autologous tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy is being developed by Dr. Udai Kammula at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for the treatment of advanced biliary tract cancers. The therapeutic process involves the surgical extraction of lymphocytes from a patient's tumor, followed by ex vivo expansion and selection for tumor reactivity. These personalized immune cells are then reinfused into the patient following a non-myeloablative lymphodepleting chemotherapy regimen consisting of cyclophosphamide and fludarabine. To enhance the persistence and activity of the infused TILs, patients also receive high-dose aldesleukin (interleukin-2). The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03801083) for patients with locally advanced, recurrent, or metastatic biliary tract cancers, including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, and ampullary carcinoma.
