Overview

This autologous tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy is an adoptive cell transfer treatment developed by the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto. The process involves extracting naturally occurring T cells from a patient's malignant pleural mesothelioma tumor, expanding these cells to large populations ex vivo, and then re-infusing them into the patient. The treatment is preceded by a lymphodepleting chemotherapy regimen (cyclophosphamide and fludarabine) to eliminate immunosuppressive cells and followed by low-dose interleukin-2 (IL-2) to promote the expansion and persistence of the infused TILs. The goal is to leverage the TILs' inherent ability to recognize and destroy tumor cells through their diverse T-cell receptors.
