Overview

Autologous umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an experimental cell therapy developed by the University of Florida for the treatment of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus in children. The therapy involves a single intravenous infusion of the patient's own stored umbilical cord blood, which contains a heterogeneous population of cells including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and regulatory T cells (Tregs). The primary therapeutic goal is to modulate the autoimmune response and preserve residual pancreatic beta-cell function and endogenous insulin production. Although early pilot studies (NCT00305344) demonstrated the safety of the procedure, they failed to show significant efficacy in slowing the decline of C-peptide levels compared to standard care, leading to the termination of this specific investigational approach.
