Overview

Avian polyclonal anti-Pseudomonas antibodies (IgY) is a passive immunotherapy biologic developed by the Mukoviszidose Institut gGmbH for the prevention of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* airway colonization in patients with cystic fibrosis. The product consists of polyclonal IgY antibodies extracted from the egg yolks of hens immunized against *P. aeruginosa* (specifically the PAO1 strain and other clinical isolates). Administered locally as a daily mouthwash or gargle, the antibodies bind to bacterial flagella, thereby inhibiting bacterial motility and attachment to the respiratory epithelium. Furthermore, the antibodies facilitate opsonization, augmenting the phagocytic killing of the bacteria by polymorphonuclear neutrophils. A Phase 3 multicenter trial (PsAer-IgY) has evaluated its efficacy in delaying the recurrence of Pseudomonas-positive cultures following successful antibiotic treatment of acute infections.
