Overview

Avocado unsaponifiables + soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) is a pharmaceutical-grade mixture comprising unsaponifiable fractions derived from avocado and soybean oils, typically in a 1:2 ratio (one-third avocado and two-thirds soybean)[1][5]. ASU consists mainly of phytosterols (beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol), tocopherols, squalene, triterpene alcohols, and other minor components[1][2][4]. Its mechanism is primarily chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory: ASU inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMP2, MMP3), suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha), downregulates prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) via cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibition, and promotes collagen and aggrecan synthesis, thus inhibiting cartilage breakdown and promoting cartilage repair[4][5]. ASU is classified as a symptomatic slow-acting drug for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA), with robust clinical data supporting its use for symptom relief and as an adjunct to standard NSAID therapy in osteoarthritis, particularly of the hip and knee[1][3][6]. Additional research suggests activity in autoimmune diseases (such as diffuse scleroderma) and menopause-related symptoms, though these uses are less well established[2].
